New attitude towards sports

The idea has never come into my mind that the girl, Cynthia would fall in love with any kind of sports before the very day when Peter taught us something about baseball. To tell you the truth, I used to hate sports because I am unable to do well in any field. I can't run fast;  I can't swim well; I am not good at any kind of ball game. What's worse, my grade in P.E is always bad. So I even prevent myself from trying because I don't want to lose and I hate the bad feeling of failure. However, everything changes last Thursday.
At the beginning, I didn't take any interest in the class about baseball. I had thought that it would be just like any other P.E class----the teacher will tell you how to throw the ball, catch the ball and hit the ball and then he will ask us to practice and I can't do well and the class is over. It was a stereotype to me. Much to my surprise, Peter didn't start with any boring rule or skill about baseball, instead, he started talking about the relationship between baseball and American history. And he also explained how baseball shows American spirit and why it has been popular for so many years. It took my attention at once. It gradually produced interest in me and stimulated me to go deeper and explore more about baseball. So in the afternoon, tired as I was, I didn't hesitate to take part in the whiffleball game. It even surprised myself. There was a voice repeating in my heart "just try it". And I tried , I held the bar, I hit the ball ,I ran and I scored. It was the first time that I had such a strong feeling of eagering to try playing sports! When others played, I screamed "Run" out of my heart loudly. I have never got so involved in anything before. I even find myself starting to love sports. It refreshed every cell in my body. It lit up my spirit. It made me feel alive! I just love to stay with all those guys yelling, laughing, talking and running. That's the true joy of sports rather than gaining a high score.
The change in my attitude towards sports make me fall into deep thoughts. It is quite different from the way we learn things in China. Teachers just pour all the knowledge into your mind and they never think of helping you develop interests. Besides, they only tell you the knowledge itself and how to use them in the exams without telling you how these things come into being and what they bring to human beings and our life. That's why we are sometimes unwilling to learn new things because we think it useless to us. To me, I always bind everything with grades. My P.E grades are bad so I hate sports. It even make me ignore other benefits of sports which are much more important. It make you healthy. Most importantly, it narrow the gap between people and even bring the world together! Any one can take part regardless of race, belief, religion etc. It is fair to all the men in the world. I know that I will keep on playing sports and enjoy all the happiness it brings to me!

  2. I've been thinking about running in the evening at WUH for a year. But I never do it. Because there are always too many things to do and I thought I may not be able to do it. I'm happy to see that you make it and did a great job in running with others. I regret not running with you that morning. And Winnie's sunrise about running makes me think a lot. I started to think that I should not be afraid of what I'm not good at and gather my courage to do it now. I hope that I can develop the hobby of running when I came back to China. Maybe you can help me with that.^_^

  3. Great post! Pete is a most excellent teacher, so you are very lucky for that. Sports are a great thing in our cultures and it's good to learn about it's history and connection to groups of people...not just the rules.

The great thing about sports too is that there are always opportunities for you to "just try it" like you said. Nike was spot on when they made the "Just Do It" slogan. You might not have enjoyed sports and PE class yet, but you are young and have discovered the rewards of trying something new.

    1. I think my original attitude towards sports is completely wrong. Sports can't be attached to grades. I would like to explore more in the field of sports in the future! And make more friends

    2. Well being graded on your performance doesn't connect the experience to positive feelings. I grew up loving sports. In middle school we had a gym teacher that made it not fun (running to military songs, physical tests, etc) and to this day I have not forgotten that. But since then I've had so many great experiences with other people.
